RIP Ben and Jen: 5 Celebrity Break-Ups That Actually Broke Our Hearts

Some people were just never meant to split.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner are getting divorced. There, I said it. But it doesn't make it any less painful.

Sometimes we have such a deep appreciation for the affection, love and loyalty two people have for one another that when we witness the end of it, we're just a little bit heartbroken ourselves. After all, if they can't pull it off, the outlook is seemingly darker for the rest of us.

Celebrities have all the resources and support in the world. Some would argue that this support is just a little too much; that the insanely high celebrity divorce rate is born of a combination of pressure and preying eyes. This may be true for many, but realistically, who doesn't experience stress? The real miracle is in finding a life partner who makes it all a little easier to tackle at the end of the day.

We want couples to succeed — to stay blissfully wed/paired/together for as long as they both shall live. So, when they do not, it's not a good feeling.

That feeling, though, isn't a new one. Here are five other celebrity break-ups that have left us shattered.

Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling

Maybe it was The Notebook. Maybe it was the mildly miraculous way their bodies seemed to fit together like puzzle pieces whenever they embraced in public (and did they).

Whatever it was, no one really believed that these two were done for eternity. Until, that is, Eva Mendes swooped in and birthed the GosBaby. Sigh.

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson

Plain and simple, these two were on the same "quiet, quirky, slightly mysterious without being super off-putting" level.

Pattinstew (yeah?) was that off-the-radar couple that you'd never have guessed would end in a "kissing the director" scandal. And here I was thinking blood was thicker than water.

Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber

FameFlynet

It was more the aftermath of this relationship that made it heart-wrenching than the actual ending of their time together.

Selena penned a song called "The Heart Wants What It Wants," not-so-arguably her best song to date, telling the story of someone allowing themselves to be abused by another, because they love them that much. In turn, Justin's subsequent entire album was inspired by Selena.

We saw the heartache, conflict and mistakes made; in a way, Jelena is your very first young adult relationship played out all over again.

Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom

The knowledge that these two would probably still be together if it weren't for drugs is tragedy enough.

The most down-to-earth of the Kardashian clan, Khloe has expressed the desire to be married and have kids; she more than deserves these things. Let's all hope Lamar gets better soon so that Khloe isn't forced to continue dating someone who voluntarily refers to himself as French Montana.

Amber Rose and Wiz Khalifa

Pacific Coast News

Theirs was a unique story. It started out a little rocky, grew into stability, and concluded with a lot of drama. Along the way, though, they had a beautiful little boy and showed the world what a real relationship looks like.

Though the numerous Twitter fights, allegations of infidelity, and overall ridiculousness wasn't necessarily for the world to see, it provided us all strangely sincere insight. In the end, the two acknowledged that they had deep love for one another; Amber continues to sing Wiz's praises to this day. This story may not be over after all...and isn't that the best kind of "ending?"
