First Look At 'Morbius' Reveals Jared Leto As The Marvel Vampire
Morbius joins Spider-Man and Venom in Sony's Marvel universe.
Is Morbius on your radar? Probably not, word on the newest Marvel comic book character to get the big screen treatment has been bupkis. We knew the Spider-Man villain would get his own movie in 2020 and Jared Leto had been cast in the title role. Filming was supposed to begin on Morbius last November, but nothing has happened. Until now.
Leto's post reveals a few things: 1. The actor didn't have to change his look much to get into character as Dr. Michael Morbius; and 2. filming is already well underway.
Morbius should slide in right next to Tom Hardy's Venom as a top contender to take on Tom Holland's Spider-Man in Sony's Marvel Universe. However, the villains are also potential Spidey teammates, depending on which comic storylines Sony looks to in the future. (A Sinister Six movie has been speculated about for years.) Morbius is more of an antihero than a true villain.
The tragic story of biochemist Michael Morbius begins in the lab. He contracts superhuman vampire abilities and physical traits after a failed biochemical experiment intended to cure his rare blood disorder. He's not a bad guy, he just thirsts for blood. Morbius also has to beware of the sun — classic vampire stuff.
What else? He can fly. He has super strength and speed, and he can heal like Wolverine. What movie fans may be most excited to see, however, is how Leto transforms into the super vampire. The photo above is definitely Leto as Dr. Morbius. The actual "living vampire" is much scarier with fangs, wild black hair, and a more demonic face. It'll be cool to see Leto in full makeup. Here's how Morbius looks in a few different comic versions:
Daniel Espinosa (Life) is in the director's chair for Morbius working off a screenplay by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. There's no word on whether Holland or Hardy will appear or cameo. The only other casting we know of is Jared Harris, but his role remains unknown. We're a long ways out so more news will come in the months ahead as filming really gets going. Morbius arrives in theaters summer 2020.
