A glimpse of Prince Charles in full-on wooing mode is available to anyone with some pounds sterling to spend on eBay. The Prince of Wales' private love letters to Janet Jenkins, the woman he was seeing shortly before he married his first wife, Princess Diana, are now up for auction.

The Prince was only 26 when he fell for the 30-year-old Jenkins, who worked as a receptionist for the British Consulate in Montreal at the time.

The letters show Charles already conflicted about his public life, and feeling the dawning pressure to find a wife. Writing to Jenkins, he says:
I would have thought your apartment is the quietest place. If we went out the press would be on to it in a flash and that would be misery. I shall just have to get married as soon as possible and then all these people might relax a little! I still think my solution of marrying a girl from each Commonwealth country is the best one. Don't worry - whatever happens I will make sure you are given early warning.
In a separate letter he seems to foreshadow his first rocky marriage to Princess Diana, writing about the possibility of a failed marriage:
Making a mistake like that is, frankly, something which concerns me enormously. That letter was written in 1980, just eight months before Prince Charles announced his engagement to Princess Diana.

Janet Jenkins sold the letters to royal memorabilia dealer Alicia Carrol almost ten years ago. Carrols has put them up on eBay with an asking price of $30,000, though no one has met that price yet. Carrol is hoping that Prince Charles will pony up the cash, telling Canadian television station CTV, "I would think that Prince Charles would want to buy them to get me out of his hair."
