Why Is Chelsea Peretti Really Leaving 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine?'

During a recent interview, Peretti said leaving 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' wasn't fully her decision.

Chelsea Peretti Reveals The Reason Why She Left 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine'

It's official: Gina Linetti, human embodiment of the "100" emoji, is no longer an employee of TV's most loved precinct.

In the latest episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, she bid farewell to her co-workers with some outrageous dance moves, character impersonations, and (because we're talking about Gina) a cameo from Mario Lopez.

It was a sad day for everyone — especially for fans who lost their favorite character, aka the "Paris of people" — but it wasn't a shocker. At least, not like Brooklyn Nine-Nine's 24-hour cancellationChelsea Peretti's departure was announced long before Season 6. In October 2017, the comedian took to Twitter to share Gina would only appear in part of the new season.

"B99 fans. Hiiiiiiiiiiii. Chelsea Peretti, here. I won't be doing a full season of Brooklyn Nine Nine in Season 6," she wrote. "But that doesn’t mean I won’t ever be back, winky face emoji, heart emoji. I want to thank you for the hours you spent watching Gina be Gina."

Then, on Thursday, the inevitable happened. After she gifted everyone with a "signature Gina moment," she left the precinct and the show. Her exit was a tough blow for B99 fans and calls for investigation: Why did Peretti really leave the Nine-Nine?

During a recent interview with TVLine, the star revealed her exit wasn't as straightforward as we thought.

"It wasn’t fully just my decision. It’s hard to get into the weeds of what exactly transpired and how it all shook out. But it kind of came together to be this timing that presented itself," she explained. "So I kind of knew that it was going to be happening for a while… [and was] holding on to this feeling of, like, ‘I’m going away from this family’ in my head."

What does this mean?

It could just mean she's a new mom. The actress recently welcomed a son with husband Jordan Peele, and it's no stretch to assume she wants to give her child all the Gina moments instead of dividing mommy time and work.

While Peretti was on maternity leave, Brooklyn Nine-Nine released a string of Gina-less episodes, and her absence made fans question if she was leaving the show permanently. Peretti made a return only to announce she was actually leaving the precinct altogether.

But during her convo with the Hollywood Reporter, she explained her departure isn't something she can discuss openly. She said she isn't in the position to clarify if it was her choice to leave or if producers wrote her out.

"That’s the part that I’m deliberately not clarifying, because I feel like I can’t get into the exact breakdown [of what happened]. I’m just a lowly actor out here without much status. Everyone’s like, "Hey, do a bunch of interviews." And I’m like, "All right. I don’t know how to talk about it." she said. "But I feel like it’s one of those things … you write about Hollywood all the time. No one can ever fully say the whole story of what’s going on. But the gist is it was somewhat mutual. And it was amicable. That’s the best way I can put it."

At least there's no bad blood — not between the actress and series creators Dan Goor and Michael Schur, and definitely not between Peretti and the cast. Can you imagine Peretti and Andy Samberg beefing behind the scenes? Nope.

Why Is Chelsea Peretti Really Leaving 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine'? Let’s Investigate

The actress is staying tight-lipped, so we'll probably always wonder what happened. Our theory? The show's transfer to NBC switched things up and forced a ton of adjustments (and budget cuts?) that affected her character's fate.

Nevertheless, we know she's moving on to greater things.

"I am running for President of the United States of America. Or a senator," she told THR. "Or I’d like to just keep doing great comedies till I die."

Uh, #Peretti2020, please!
