Netflix Welcomes You To Greendale: Home Of Sabrina Spellman

Netflix has resurrected Sabrina Spellman, our favorite teenage witch, and we're absolutely here for it.

If you're like me, you grew up watching Sabrina, The Teenage Witch, starring the one and only Melissa Joan Hart. Times were much different for Sabrina then — think bright, clean, and most importantly, a life accompanied by a laugh track.

When it comes to Netflix's latest creation, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, expect none of the above, especially the laugh track. Instead, you should prepare yourself for intense storylines, loads of blood, and a delightful sprinkling of dark humor (which often plays out at inappropriate times).

Well, what can we say other than we've fallen under Sabrina's spell. Here are the 5 reasons why we're absolutely bewitched by the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

1. Our Beloved Aunties

Where would Sabrina be without her iconic aunties?

Aunt Zelda (Miranda Otto) and Aunt Hilda (Lucy Davis) raised Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) when her parents died. They took Sabrina in — a half-mortal, half-witch — with open arms, even though Sabrina's birth was looked down upon by their coven.

However, these two sisters couldn't be more different. Aunt Zelda is very close to Father Blackwood (Richard Coyle) and the Church Of Night, while Aunt Hilda is very close to Sabrina, Ambrose (Chance Perdomo), and the pleasurable things she's come to love about the mortal world, like romance novels.

Regardless, their love for one another runs deep — often, six feet deep. When Aunt Zelda learns Aunt Hilda isn't doing her part to persuade Sabrina into signing her soul over to the Dark Lord, she strikes Hilda, buries her body, and waits for her to dig her way out of the ground!

Yet, in the end, when it comes to Sabrina, they love her unconditionally and that's all that truly matters, right? Over the course of the show, the two sisters grow closer as their unresolved issues — from as far back as their days at the Academy Of Unseen Arts — get addressed, and long overdue apologies are finally made.

2. Adding Ambrose

If you aren't familiar with the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comic series — the one Netflix's adaptation is based on — you'll come to find one of the standout additions to the Sabina universe is Sabrina's cousin Ambrose (Chance Perdomo).

Ambrose is a warlock who's been hexed into house arrest for 75 years for trying to rob the Vatican. He passes his time by serving as a mortician at the Spellman Mortuary — yet, somehow — still manages to find, attract, and seduce gorgeous young warlocks from the comfort of his home.

What's particularly great about Ambrose is that he fills the role of Salem — who, in this adaptation is still a cat, just not a talking cat. Ambrose not only brings sharp wit and humor to the show, but he also provides Sabrina with the guidance and support she needs, all while being unapologetically himself.

3. Harvey Hearts Sabrina

We definitely ship it!

Harvey Kinkle (Ross Lynch) and Sabrina are the cutest new couple to grace our TVs. From pumpkin picking to the cute little ways Harvey lets Sabrina know he loves her, we can't help but swoon and root for these two.

In fact, Harvey isn't afraid of being vulnerable with Sabrina. When he tells her he doesn't want to go work for his dad in the mines, because he's scared of a creature he saw down there when he was eight, Sabrina totally gets it! Though this is because Sabrina knows Harvey's describing the Dark Lord, I'd like to think it's because they have an unconditional love for each other.

Yes, they have communication issues, but who doesn't? At least with Harvey and Sabrina, their issues only revolve around the fact that Sabrina is a witch. When Sabrina tells Harvey her big secret, he totally freaks out! Clearly, Sabrina has no choice but to put a "mind-clearing" charm on Harvey, so we shouldn't judge her too harshly for this indiscretion. I'm sure you remember a few instances where you could've used a spell like that on someone.

4. Sabrina vs. The Dark Lord

Netflix

For some — the devil in particular — a half-witch/half-human soul is quite the delicacy.

One of the most terrifying aspects of this show is the way the devil is portrayed. A goat-like figure, the Dark Lord, as he's referred to throughout the show, haunts Sabrina through visions and dreams because he's hellbent on claiming her soul and having her sign it over to him.

Sabrina, on the other hand, has made it her mission to stay as far away from the Dark Lord as possible. And though her father signed her soul over to the Dark Lord when she was only a few days old in order to marry Sabrina's mortal mother, Sabrina still finds a clever way to oppose the Dark Lord, "toeing the line" between the mortal world and the world of dark magic for as long as she possibly can.

Sabrina makes it clear her absolute mission is to overturn the Dark Lord through her education of magic at the Academy of Unseen Arts. Only time will tell if she'll succeed. You better hit those book, girl!

5. Ms. Wardwell Isn't Well

Sabrina's favorite teacher is, well, no longer available. When Ms. Wardwell (Michelle Gomez) is brutally murdered in the first 10 minutes of the show, we know this is going to be one wild ride. What we couldn't imagine, however, is what comes next.

With her blood still warm, Ms. Wardwell's physical form is inhabited by a demon mother whose only goal is to make sure she delivers Sabrina to the Dark Lord. Deliciously wicked, the demon occupying Ms. Wardwell starts to grow on you, quickly becoming one of the most entertaining characters on the show. Not only is she an excellent voodoo dollmaker, but she's also single-handedly responsible for some of Sabrina's most entertaining near-death experiences.

Still, Ms. Wardwell's ability to seamlessly move between comedic charm and back to demonic is what makes her character absolutely fascinating. You can't help but believe, at times, that she truly does have Sabrina's best interests in mind.
