That's when the Internet got weird.

It's a sad day when an animal dies, including pesky nocturnal creatures who are often considered fodder for roadkill. But in the town of Toronto, every animal has value. On Thursday, local residents paid tribute to a dead raccoon left on the side of the road for an entire day by creating a memorial for him that included flowers, candles, letters, and photos. #DeadRaccoonTO also began trending on Twitter.

Animal Services finally picked up the raccoon, which someone named Conrad, by nightfall.

However, by then, things on Twitter had already gotten weird.

Like, really weird.

#RIP Conrad. You'll live in our hearts forever.
